The first step in determining what size unit you may want is to measure what needs to go in or under the proposed unit. Generally an automobile is only 6'-7' wide but, how wide is it when one or both doors are open? Consider a "typical" 2 car garage that is 18' wide. Unless the only things in that garage are two compact cars, and nothing else, 18' may be sufficient. Most folks have other items stored in their garages, further reducing the available space. We encourage our customers to measure their automobiles with both passenger and driver doors open to get an accurate representation of the potential needed space. At SWS, we commonly refer to the old adage, in regards to space, "it's better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it!"
Most of our metal buildings can be installed on multiple surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, dirt, gravel or grass with the exception of our wide span and clear span units. Due to the magnitude of those units we require them to be installed on concrete only. That doesn't mean an entire concrete pad is necessary but at least concrete footings. Due to the affordability of our units, it's not uncommon for the cost of concrete to be equal or greater than the actual building so it's important to take that cost into consideration. If being installed on a natural surface (dirt, grass, gravel) all we require is for the area to be flat and ideally level. If the area is not level and cannot be made level, that's ok too, we can further customize your building and, for an additional cost, we can modify the unit to fit your terrain.
We have 3 different options when it comes to the roof:
The Standard has the roof panels running parallel to the ridge of the roof. There is no ridgecap at the peak of the roof nor are there eaves (roof overhang) at the sides like our A-Frame units. This is our most economical roof option and is certainly sufficient for an open carport where the main objective is to simply get out of the sun.
The A-Frame Horizontal roof has a ridecap at the peak of the roof as well as boxed eaves overhanging either side of the unit by 6" with the panels also running parallel to the ridgcap. This is a popular choice for customers who simply want a practical shade structure but are seeking a more "traditional" aesthetic as it more resembles a roof style you would see on a home.
The A-Frame Vertical roof is identical to the AFH roof with the exception of the panels running perpendicular to the ridgecap. The AFV roof is the best option for shedding rain and snow. It is by far the most popular choice for customers choosing an enclosed unit as it is the most resistant to leaks and, in areas with snow, is pretty much the only choice. Will we sell you an enclosed unit with a horizontal roof? Yes, we will build just about any unit you would like, but we would advise against it.
A quick note about steel gauges; the lower the number the heavier (thicker) the metal. Our frames come in two different gauges, 12 and 14 gauge. The heavier 12 gauge square tubing measures 2.25"x2.25" and the lighter 14 gauge tubing measures 2.5"x2.5". Our 14 gauge is plenty sufficient for all of our units, regardless of the size but some customers prefer to build things as heavy and tough as possible; for those customers we have that option.
Our panels come is 2 different gauge as well, lighter 29 gauge or heavier 26 gauge. We are proud to offer two types of 26 gauge panels R panels and 26 gauge PBR (Purlin Bearing) panels. PBR panels have taller 1 1/4" ribs as opposed to 3/4" ribs thereby adding substantial overall strength to the panel. PBR panels are commonly found on commercial buildings due to their strength and superior weather sealing properties. 29 gauge is the most common choice for customers just wanting a small garage or open carport but customers that are building a larger unit often choose one of our two 26 gauge options.
Of course, if you're uncertain which gauge of frame or siding is best for you, feel free to drop us a line for a free consultation. We often remind customers that this building is a one time expense that will be here for the rest of our lives, so build it exactly how you want it!
A more detailed explanation of the different panel gauges, types and colors are available for viewing on our home page, near the bottom.
Our units are not only custom built to your specifications and engineer certified but they are also delivered and installed. No more waiting for weeks or months for a building to be completed, once your unit is delivered, it will be professionally installed that very day. Our larger units may take a few days to install but, as many reviewers say in regards to our installers, "they are like a well oiled machine." We could not sell our units with the confidence we do if not for our magnificent installation crews. No need to take my word for it. I encourage you to take a look at some of our, or should I say "their" reviews.
Horizontal siding is available on all of our units 30' in width or smaller, and just as with our roofs, it is a more economical choice and sufficient for many customers' needs. If you choose to enclose your unit with horizontal siding vs horizontal siding, don't forget that adding a wainscot, which is a different color at the bottom portion of a unit, is a free "upgrade" we offer. Remember, your building will exist for a very long time, so make it stunning!
Vertical siding is an available upgrade on any size unit. By virtue of their design, all panels are going to offer greater strength when installed vertically. This is the reason vertical siding is the ONLY option for our widespan (greater than 30' in width) units. There is substantially more "bracing" with vertical siding as well. In order to properly secure the 3' wide panels, horizontal framing must be run between each pair of legs, offering even more structural integrity. Vertical siding is primarily used in commercial/industrial buildings but is also a popular choice for those going for a more "traditional" appearance.
If maximum strength is the imperative, there's no doubt you should go with vertical siding. Horizontal siding is a more economical way to simply get your valuables out of the harsh elements. Many customers find the pictures on the website helpful for comparison, and the 3D builder, although computer generated, is a useful and creative tool for many as well. Whichever choice you make, you'll be thrilled with the end result!
